Having lived in Richmond upon Thames for the past 18 years, I feel very blessed to be able to raise my own family in such a beautiful part of London. Richmond has a wealth of natural landscapes, historic lanes, parks and riverside that will make a perfect backdrop for your family photo shoot.

In this guide, I will take you to some of my favourite parts of Richmond Borough to help you choose the right location for your family. Among my favourite places are Richmond Hill & Petersham Meadows, the Terrace Gardens, Richmond and Bushy Parks and Richmond riverside.

Richmond Hill & Terrace Gardens
The top of Richmond Hill offers some of the most beautiful views in London and makes a great starting point for a family photo shoot. From the terrace at the top of the hill, steps lead down to the Terrace Field, an open meadow left wild to the soft textures of natural grasses and wild flowers.
Through a secret gate are the Terrace Gardens, a pretty, hill-side, park with manicured flower beds and, in the early summer, a beautiful rose garden with herbaceous borders. At the bottom of the hill the Thames snakes along towards Petersham Meadows in one direction and Richmond Bridge and riverside in the other.

Richmond Green & Riverside
Richmond Green is a large swathe of grassland flanked by large trees and beautiful historic buildings and pubs. I especially love this area of Richmond in the autumn, when the Green is a little quieter and the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. There can be a lot of parked cars in the area so I do suggest combining it with another location.
Just a few minutes walk from the Green is the riverside, with Richmond Bridge spanning the River Thames. During the week, this can be a really quiet area and can make a lovely location for a family photo shoot, especially if you are looking for something a little bit different to a park shoot.

Richmond Park
Covering an area of 2,500 acres it is easy to find a quiet, peaceful spot in Richmond Park although we may bump into some of the deer that also roam here. It's the perfect place for a family adventure with rolling grasslands, bracken and wooded areas with plenty of logs and branches to clamber on. It's an amazing place to photograph young children running wild and free.
Richmond Park is also a great place to photograph families outdoors throughout the year as it changes with every season. I particularly love photographing families of all ages here in late summer, when the grass has turned yellow and in autumn when the trees are golden brown.

BUSHY PARK, TEDDINGTON
Bushy Park is my local park and the place where my own children's memories have been made. I never tire visiting or photographing other local families here. The park is beautiful year-round and particularly in the early spring when it has the most beautiful displays of cherry blossom and bluebells. From late September until early December it is full of the colours of autumn.
Like Richmond Park, Bushy Park is home to herds of Red and Fallow deer and is a wonderful place to photograph families with babies and children of all ages thanks to its varied natural landscapes.

Marble Hill Park, St Margarets
Nestled between Richmond and Twickenham, on the banks of the Thames, Marble Hill Park in St Margarets is a wide open space that also has some wooded areas perfect for tree climbing. In the spring, there are beautiful areas of cow parsley with hawthorn blossom and even a few small patches of bluebells.
The park is an easy walk to the equally lovely wooded and formal gardens of York House, as well as Twickenham Riverside - in fact, this has to be one of my favourite walks in the area!

Marble Hill, St Margarets
KEW GARDENS
Kew is a really popular choice for family photo shoots thanks to the beautiful range of manicured gardens and natural landscapes within the enormous site. I particularly love photographing families here during the spring, early summer and in the autumn.
Kew also boasts impressive buildings and structures like the Palm and Temperate Houses and The Hive. There is also 37 aces of natural woodlands. As a member of the Gardens I can provide complimentary access for one guest. Additional entrance fees plus a location fee will apply if you wish to have your shoot at the gardens.
