This lovely family invited me to their home in Battersea for a newborn and sibling photo shoot to welcome their 4th child. Mum and Dad are the founders of Heidi Rose London, a gorgeous sustainable children’s clothing & toy brand, who I’ve worked with since their launch to create all the brand’s lifestyle imagery.
This wonderfully energetic family were a delight to photograph – and the interior of their home provided the most gorgeous backdrop, with the soft pastel pinks and natural green tones of their new daughter’s enchanting nursery.
What I loved about this session was how it allowed me to document authentic family moments. The older children interacted with their baby sister in their own ways – some more gentle and thoughtful, while others were full of boundless energy, eager to jump into every frame. Instead of focusing on posed shots, we embraced the natural flow of the day, capturing moments of sibling cuddles, curious glances, and the tender love of parents watching their children bond. The result was a collection of images that reflect the true dynamic of this growing family, full of warmth, love, and the real beauty of life at home.
Doing a newborn and sibling photo shoot is always special as I get to capture the love and connection that is forming (not only between the new parents), but also their older siblings too.
There was a really interesting dynamic for this session, as we had a mix of older and younger siblings – but something that really stands out in the imagery is the heartwarming joy and instant bond that can be seen as the whole family celebrates their newest arrival.
Before any newborn and sibling photo shoot I love to remind my clients that some chaos is to be expected (and embraced). The older children are usually excited, and proud of their new role as big brother or sister and that energy is an absolute delight to photograph.
I always find it best to help Mum and Dad to relax first, letting them know that we can just take things as they come and be fully present in the moment. Of course a little bit of pre-planning also ensures we have a smooth time on the day of the photo shoot (like making sure older siblings are well-rested and have full tummies – we all know the dangers of a hungry toddler).
Getting older siblings involved during a newborn and sibling photoshoot is a great way to document their bond with one another. I find that by giving them some sort of responsibility helps give them a sense of purpose, and they are only too happy to show what a great older brother or sister they can be.
It might also be helpful to have a family member on hand to wrangle up the troops and give you and your partner a few moments alone to spend with each other as you document a few intimate moments with your little one.
